Q. Can you tell or Show me how you would check that the horn is working in this vehicle?

A. Push the horn and listen for the sound. Only operate the horn if in the driving test centre car park.

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides you the best protection in the event of a crash?

A. You should adjust the head restraint by pressing the button in and moving it up or down. The rigid part of the head restraint should be level with your eyes and ears, and close to the back of your head as comfortable as possible. N.B some head restraint may not be adjustable.

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would check that all the direction indicators are working in this vehicle?

A. Press the hazard warning light switch on. Than walk around the car to check that the indicator lights are working

Q. Can you tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti-lock braking system (ABS)?

A. If there is a fault with the anti lock braking system the A.B.S Warning light will come on the dashboard.

Q. Can you tell or explain me how you would check if the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?

A.

  • 1.If the steering feels heavy when turning the wheel then there is a problem with the power assisted steering system.
  • If the power assisted steering warning sign comes on the dashboard then there is a problem with the power steering.
  • If the steering wheel feels soft and light as you turn the steering while the engine is started then the power assisted steering is in good working order.

Q. Can you tell me how you would check the reverse light is working in this vehicle?

A. You need to select reverse gear and check the reflections in the windows, garage doors etc. or ask someone to check for you.

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car? I can assist you.

A. Press the foot brake down and ask someone to check if the brake light bulbs work or not or check the reflections in the windows and garage doors, etc).

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey?

A.

  • You should pump the foot brake and it should feel hard. If it feels spongy or slack then it’s not working properly
  • The vehicle should not pull to one side as you drive off when you apply the foot brake slightly.

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear. Please make sure you keep the vehicle safe and under control?

A.

  • Press the foot brake firmly to keep control of the vehicle.
  • Release the parking brake (handbrake) and then reapply it fully. Make sure it’s not loose.

Q. Can you show me how you would operate front & back wiper?

A. Operate control to wipe windscreen. (Ask your instructor to demonstrate.)

Q. Can you show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipes?

A. Operate the control to wash and wipe windscreen. (Ask your instructor to show you.)

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would set the demister controls to clear all windows effectively? (This should include both front and rear screen.)

A.

  • You need to set all controls including; fan, temperature, air direction to clear front windscreen.
  • Turn heated windscreen on for the back window. (Ask your instructor to show you.)

Q. Can you show or tell me how you will switch on the sidelights and tail lights? Also how would you check if they are working?

A. You will need to operate the side lights switch and walk round the car to check the lights are working. (Ask your instructor to show you.)

Q. Can you Show or Tell me how you would switch headlights on and check they are working? (No need to exit vehicle)

A. Operate the switch then check the dashboard for headlight warning sign. Then walk round the vehicle to check the lights are working.

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst you are inside the car?

A.

  • Switch the headlight on first then push the stalk away from you to turn the main beam light on.
  • Check the dashboard for main beam warning sign.
  • You need to go outside the vehicle to see if the lights are working or not.

Q. Can you show or tell me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use it?

A.

  • Turn on the headlight and then operate the fog light switch.
  • Check the dashboard for warning lights. Then explain when you would use it.

Q. Can you tell me how you would check the tyres have sufficient tread depth and that they’re in generally good condition and safe to use on the road?

A.

  • The tyre should have 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the tyre all round.
  • There should be no cuts or bulges around the entire outer circumference.

Q. Can you open the bonnet and identify the engine coolant reservoir & tell me how you would check if there is a safe level of engine coolant? (It’s also known as anti-freeze & radiator coolant)

A.

  • Identify engine coolant reservoir then check minimum and maximum marker.
  • Describe how to top up to correct level. (Ask instructor to demonstrate.) (Do not open cap if engine is hot.)

Q. Can you open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that there is sufficient engine oil?

A.

  • Identify dipstick and explain minimum and maximum marker and explain how you will check.
  • Identify where you will top up engine oil. (Check oil level when engine is cold.)

Q. Can you open the bonnet and identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that there is a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?

A. Identify brake fluid reservoir and check min/max marking. Open cap to top up with brake fluid.

Q. Can you open the bonnet and identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the water level?

A. Identify the windscreen washer reservoir and explain how to check by using min/max marker. Open the cap to top up with water.

Q. Can you tell me where you would find the information for the tyre pressure of this car and how you will check the tyre pressure?

A.

  • The recommended tyre pressure would be found in the Manufacturer’s vehicle guide book.
  • The tyre pressure should be checked with a reliable pressure gauge.
  • You should check and adjust the pressure when tyres are cold. Check the spare tyre too.
